How Were The Best Elliptical Trainers Chosen?

So how did we select the best elliptical trainers for 2012?

We looked at a number of factors, explained in detail below.

Also, please note that these 'Best Buy' awards are for the newest 2012 version of that particular model.

Stability - While home ellipticals don't have to feel like health club machines, they should be stable and feel solid when you work them. They shouldn't wobble or shake, even when you pick up the pace.

Comfort - A lot of elliptpicals today may look pretty - but they are not comfortable for long periods of time. We tried to find crosstrainers that were built to ergonomically correct standards and that would give you a comfortable workout.

Smoothness - The Smoothness of the elliptical ride is important for your long term enjoyment of your crosstrainer. You don't want a trainer the jump and starts. Factors that go into the smoothness include the weight of the flywheel, pivoting footpedals and stability of the machine.

Stride - Stride is the distance between the foot pedals. A shorter stride can feel bumpy and a stride that is too long, for shorter users, is too much of a strain. We chose machines that offered a wide variety of strides - and even some with multiple strides.

Comparison to Other Trainers In Similar Price Categories - We compared ellipticals in their relative price categories and tried to find machines that just gave you more in terms of features, stability, warranty and comfort.

Expert and User Reviews - Many of our 'Best Buys' have also earned awards from other experts like Consumer magazines. They also have a trend of very high user reviews over time - which is a good sign of long term quality.

So those are some of the factors we used to select this year's Best Elliptical machines. If you still want to review elliptical trainer ratings by brand, check out our brand reviews here.
