Our Review:

The Schwinn 431 elliptical is one of Schwinn's higher end models (although it's still a starter machine).

It's actually one of the more popular Schwinn models because it gives you quite a few extras that you don't get with other Schwinns - for a great price.

For example, it gives you a larger, blue backlit console. This makes it much easier to read your workout stats than other models which do not have a backlit console.

The console shows your Time, Interval Time, RPM, Watts, Distance, Pulse, Speed, Calories and Resistance. There are also more built-in workouts included here - 19 to be exact. Programs include heart-rate controlled, calorie-goal, profile programs, a fitness test and several custom options.

Another thing we liked about this machine was the 25 pound flywheel. With ellipticals, the heavier the flywheel, the smoother and more stable the motion feels for you.

And you don't usually find a flywheel so heavy on a starter crosstrainer - so it's a great find on the Schwinn 431.

This elliptical also gets points for running very quiet. You can easily set it up in front of a TV an hear everything crystal clear.

And measuring at the base just 59 inches long by 26 inches wide, it's also pretty compact which makes it a great option for smaller workout areas.

Any drawbacks?

Well, keep in mind this is still a starter machine. The warranty is on the shorter side and it just won't give you the longevity of a higher end crosstrainer.

Another thing (although pretty small) is that the console fan is not great. It doesn't give you a lot of air. The console speakers (for the iPod dock) could also be much, much better.

At this price point there's a lot of tough competition. So you may want to compare the 431 to Nordic Track models or even the Livestrong 8.0 which also give you incline (that you don't get on the 431).

But overall however, considering the price point, the Schwinn 431 elliptical is a solid, well designed elliptical - good value for the money.
