Schwinn Elliptical Trainers

Are They Right For You?

Schwinn ellipticals are a popular starter brand of crosstrainers.

Starting around $400 and up, it's easy to see why these are very popular with budget buyers.

What most people don't know is that Schwinn is actually owned by Nautilus - one of the larger companies in the fitness equipment industry.

What about the ellipticals themselves? How do they stack up?

This article will go over the pros and then the cons about these trainers so you can decide if they're the right fit for you.

Schwinn ellipticals have been around for years - and started gaining real attention a few years back when Consumer Reports gave the Schwin 418 a "Best Buy". (The 418 has since been discontinued)

People like the design and the solid feel of these trainers - and of course the price as well.

Nautilus has done a great job with the design of these machines. They feel solid and stable for the most part. And most models have articulating footpedals which give you solid support for your ankle through the elliptical motion.

Another thing that gives them a stable, smooth feel is that they tend to have heavier flywheels than you normally get at these price points.

Other popular features are the console fans and some models even carry iPod docks with speakers. Most units also come with hand grip heart rate sensors.

Strides are decent with these machines with most models giving you a 17 - 18" stride. This should be fine for most people under 6 feet. However the Schwinn 460 even comes with a variable stride from 2" up to 26" which is impressive.

Because of their design, these machines also tend to run fairly quiet - another plus if you want to watch TV or listen to music when you workout.

Those are some of the pros. What about the cons?

Well, the cons are mainly found on the lower end machines. Many of their units under $600 do not have backlit consoles. In fact these consoles are just plain small and hard to read.

And the warranties are pretty short on these machines as well, which doesn't give you a lot of protection.

Also, keep in mind that these trainers are starter machines - so they won't give you the longevity or the beefier construction you really need if you plan on heavy, frequent use.
