Our Review:

The Schwinn 420 elliptical is a simpler, starter elliptical, coming in under $600, making it very popular with budget buyers.

It does have a few strong pros - as well as some strong cons as well. First the pros.

We really like the design of this elliptical. It has articulating footplates which follow (and support) your heel through the entire ellipticla motion, giving you more support.

The perimeter weighted flywheel also adds a nice smooth feel to the ride here. And the moving armbars let you grip them at different points, which means you can tailor the arm movement based on your height.

There's also a heart rate monitor. You grip the hand sensors on the stationary bars in front of the console to get a reading. And you can also hook your iPod up and listen through to your favorite tunes through the console speakers.

The 420 - as with many Schwinn models - also runs very quiet, which a lot of people really like, especially if you want to watch TV as you workout.

Unfortunately there are some drawbacks to this elliptical as well.

The first would be the console. It's not backlit and very, very small. So it can be very hard to read. If you don't have perfect eyesight, you may be straining to see your workout stats.

Also, the stride length is 18" - which should be fine for more people under 6 feet. But if you're taller you may feel as if this is just too short for you.

Finally, both the fan and the speakers on this machine are lacking. You don't get much air and the speakers aren't very good. You may do better just using your earphones.

Overall, the design of this elliptical is solid - and you really can't beat the price. However, if you care about actually reading the console you may want to check out a similarly priced NordicTrack or Proform instead.
